Midwest Peace and Liberty Fest
(Libertopia East/PorcFest West)

Announcing the 2nd Annual Midwest Peace and Liberty Fest hosted byThe Michigan Peace and Liberty Coalition!

Join us for a long, laid back weekend of peace, liberty, and connection at this family friendly camping event this summer!

http://miplc.org/upcoming-events/fest/

The celebration of freedom, connection on values, and camaraderie of minds experienced by those who attended the first ever Midwest Peace & Liberty Fest was so incredible and life enriching that it’s happening again this August, Friday the 22nd at 10am through Monday the 25th at noon! It’s the second annual celebration of freedom to be held in the Midwest area hosted by The Michigan Peace & Liberty Coalition. This summertime gathering will be an excellent opportunity to connect with other likeminded individuals from around the Midwest and beyond in a laid-back outdoor setting.

This year’s fest will take place at Circle Pines Center in Delton, Michigan. It is a member-based education and recreation center whose mission is to teach peace, social justice, environmental stewardship and cooperation. We will have plenty of room on acres of land with rolling hills, hardwood and pine forests, meadows and a sandy beach on spring-fed Stewart Lake. There are miles of trails for hiking, diverse wildlife and an organic garden and orchard provide fresh produce.

You can expect diverse and life-enriching experiences at this year’s fest. We know how valuable free time sharing meals, conversation, and connection with a like-minded community is, and with that in mind, we’ve made sure to maintain the laid back and flexible nature of last year’s festival. We are also aware that there is value in highlighting the innovative and intelligent minds the liberty community has to offer from across the midwest. At the Spontaneous Order Tent, expect a line-up of midwest sourced liberty enthusiasts offering talks, interactive discussions, demonstrations, and dialogues on the most pertinent issues relevant to your freedom! There will also be opportunities for you to take the floor if you so choose. We will announce a schedule for the Spontaneous Order Tent in the near future.

Truly free market exchanges will inevitably be happening throughout the weekend, especially at the Agora. We highly encourage guests to bring their offerings to contribute to the building of a bustling and robust market for everyone to enjoy. Food, handmade goods, apparel, currency exchange, and a variety of other services will be available.

Oh! And we can’t forget to mention Lou’s almost-famous breakfast hash and chicken wings. 🙂

If true freedom is important to you, and you’d like to contribute to the success of this event, please contact us. We will have volunteer opportunities as the fest draws nearer.

Roots of Liberty: Unlocking the Federalist Papers

 4:00PM

Featuring Tim Donner, Founder and President, One Generation Away; Roger Pilon, Vice President for Legal Affairs, Cato Institute; Christopher Donesa, Former Chief Counsel, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; and Claire McCaffery Griffin, Principal, CGC, LLC. Moderated by Dean Reuter, Vice President and Director, Practice Groups, Federalist Society.

The Federalist Papers, which explain America’s founding principles and the practical means for securing them, were instrumental in winning the hard-fought battle to ratify the Constitution. Yet today, high school students often find it difficult to read them, if they are even encouraged to do so. To address that problem, and to help America’s future leaders to better understand the principles embedded in the Constitution, One Generation Away has published a book of essays by leading constitutional scholars that explains the central themes of the Federalist Papers in a language that upper-level high school students of today will more easily comprehend. Please join us for a discussion of this book by two of its authors, followed by a discussion of how it may be used in the classroom.

Public Opinion and War

2:00PM

Featuring Adam Berinsky, Professor of Political Science, MIT; John Mueller, Professor of Political Science, Ohio State University, Senior Fellow, Cato Institute;Jason Reifler, Senior Lecturer in Politics, University of Exeter; and Trevor Thrall, Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs, George Mason University. Moderated by Justin Logan, Director of Foreign Policy Studies, Cato Institute.

When and why does the American public support war? Washington politicians and pundits often puzzle over these questions as they try to win support for their policies, but there is a large body of academic research on public opinion and war. Do events, such as casualties or the prospect of victory, affect support more, or do partisan identities or other attachments play a larger role? What sorts of arguments should hawks and doves make if they hope to win support for their views? Please join four leading political scientists as they examine the causes of public support for war.

PETER LEESON BOOK PANEL: ANARCHY UNBOUND: WHY SELF-GOVERNANCE WORKS BETTER THAN YOU THINK
  • Time:
    2:00pm – 3:30pm
  • Location:
George Mason University, Fairfax Campus; Johnson Center Cinema
The F. A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the Mercatus Center invites you to a panel discussion featuring Peter Leeson and his new book, Anarchy Unbound: Why Self-Governance Works Better Than You Think.
In this book, Professor Leeson uses rational choice theory to explore the benefits of self-governance. Relying on experience from the past and present, this book provides evidence of anarchy “working” where it is least expected to do so and explains how this is possible. Provocatively, Leeson argues that in some cases anarchy may even outperform government as a system of social organization, and demonstrates where this may occur. Anarchy Unbound challenges the conventional self-governance wisdom. It showcases the incredible ingenuity of private individuals to secure social cooperation without government and how their surprising means of doing so can be superior to reliance on the state.
We will be pleased to hear from the author, Peter Leeson, as well as chair, Peter Boettke, and commenters, Barak Richman and John Hasnas.
